Learning the piano is about far more than simply attending lessons.
At The Piano Cottage, we do not just teach a lesson and send you away hoping for the best. From your initial consultation to lesson planning, practice guidance, and post-lesson homework, every stage is carefully designed to provide structure, clarity, and direction.
Our system has been developed through years of teaching, and has helped many students make steady, meaningful progress without ever feeling lost or overwhelmed.
That said, there is one thing we cannot do for you: practise. We can provide the roadmap, the guidance, and the support — but the journey itself is yours to take. After all, even the best doctor cannot help a patient who refuses the treatment.
Before your trial lesson, we take time to understand your musical background, current level, interests, and long-term goals. You will receive a short questionnaire beforehand, so we can make the most of our time together and ensure your trial lesson is both efficient and meaningful.
For beginners, we provide our own teaching materials, so there is no need to buy additional books at the start. During the lesson we also have a short discussion with parents to understand the student's goals, learning style, and expectations — this helps us build a learning plan tailored to each individual. For more advanced learners, we encourage you to prepare a piece to perform, so we can assess your level, identify the most important areas to improve, and give clear guidance on your next steps.
Every student learns differently, has different goals, and progresses at a different pace. Some simply want to enjoy playing for pleasure; others are working towards a Grade 8 Distinction or preparing for performances and examinations. Following the trial lesson, we create a personalised learning plan based on your goals, current level, learning style, and available practice time — so both students and parents know exactly what to focus on, what to expect, and how progress will happen.
Practice is one of the biggest factors in progress, and here students are never left wondering what to practise next. After each lesson, students receive a clear lesson summary, a weekly goal, and a structured practice guide designed to reach that goal. For younger beginners, we go one step further with day-to-day practice tasks, giving students and parents complete clarity between lessons. No guesswork. No confusion. Just progress.
No learning journey is complete without regular review. Every quarter, we reflect on the progress made, celebrate achievements, address any challenges, and adjust the learning plan where needed. This keeps every student moving towards their goals with clarity and calm. Learning the piano does not have to be confusing. Relax — we know the way.
